At Nômade Tulum, we invite you to join us for "Portraits: Mirroring the Past," a themed month dedicated to exploring our connections to ancestry and lineage through the art of photography. This experience is inspired by Día de los Muertos, a revered Mexican tradition where we honor and remember our departed loved ones.
We've all experienced the moment of looking at old photographs of our relatives and recognizing features, expressions, or even mannerisms that we share. These similarities are no accident; they are the manifestation of physical, emotional, and sometimes even karmic traits passed down through generations. New research and various philosophies suggest that the stories we live today are not isolated—they are the continuation of narratives shaped by those who came before us.
What You’ll Experience
This month, we will be hosting an artist-in-residence who specializes in portrait photography. His work will guide us in exploring how our lineage influences who we are today. Through his lens, we will delve into the stories of our family lineage and see how these stories are reflected in our own lives.
Throughout this month, we will create a space where art, heritage, and self-discovery converge. As you participate, you'll not only reflect on who you are today but also explore the journey that brought you here, offering a unique, intimate connection to your past.
One of the most ancient traditions from the Mexican and Mayan traditions still alive today is the temazcal - an ancient steam ceremony used for centuries as a place for community to come together to heal, detox and pray for the Earth and their ancestors. Working with the alchemy of the fire, volcanic stones and water, enter into a metaphorical womb and journey through 4 doors, or portals, that connect you to the elements and return to the essence of self through songs, prayers and offerings.
The temazcal is a cosmic portal that purifies the body, mind and spirit leading to an experience of release and rebirth. Don’t miss this unique experience to connect with the wisdom of these sacred lands and your own ancestors.
At the core of ancient traditions lies a simple yet powerful practice: using the natural elements of the earth to heal and restore. This herbal and flower bath ceremony combines warm water with medicinal herbs, volcanic stones, and rose petals to create a rejuvenating experience. Designed to help cleanse your body, mind, and spirit, the ritual invites you to step into the water and connect with the energies of nature.
The herbs release their healing properties, while volcanic stones ground and strengthen you. Rose petals add a touch of compassion and love to the experience. The elements work together to create a sense of balance and renewal, helping you let go of past traumas and embrace a state of inner harmony. This ceremony is a soothing way to reconnect with yourself, find peace, and move forward with a renewed sense of well-being.
Engage in transformative workshops using Gestalt therapy and family constellations to explore and honor your family behavioral traits. These sessions will help you understand and resolve patterns and dynamics within your family system, fostering healing and a deeper connection to your root.
Savor the flavors of your heritage with special menus inspired by traditional recipes passed down through generations.
Our chefs will create dishes that honor ancestral cuisines, offering a culinary journey that connects you to your roots and celebrates the diversity of family traditions.

PHOTOGRAPHY RESIDENT
DIEGO ORTIZ
from oct 26TH TO NOV 2ND, 2024
I’m a Mexican photographer and creative with over 10 years of experience. My work is all about capturing the present moment and blending reality with something a bit more ethereal. I believe life is fleeting, and that’s what makes it so special—I aim to freeze those moments in time.
Photography, for me, isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about telling stories and creating something that resonates on a deeper level. I’ve worked with various brands and artists, always pushing myself to find that perfect balance between the real and the surreal.
